Blogger Spotlight: Laura Adney of Have Need Want

December 8, 2014 | Blogger Feature, Blogger Spotlight

One of the most common responses I hear about blogging is the sense of community. With common interests and a shared entrepreneurial spirit, bloggers just “get each other.” We work with so many amazing bloggers so we decided to create an opportunity for bloggers to discover new friends and learn tips from each other. Our new series features a blogger and gives a glimpse into their life.

Meet Laura of Have Need Want. With an conventional route to blogging, Laura’s passion for fashion and interiors led her to start a creative outlet to share her favorite wants.

What is your best blogging tip for new bloggers?
Set realistic goals. If you are blogging part-time or full-time, the time you have to dedicate to your blog and what you can realistically get done will be different. Don’t compare yourself to other bloggers. If you focus too much on what projects they are working on you can’t clearly see what you’ve been able to accomplish. Know what sets you apart and makes you unique, you have to look at yourself like a brand, who’s your target audience and what do you want them to gain from reading your blog.

If you weren’t blogging and could do anything, what would you choose?
I would travel the world with my husband for a few years then settle down and start to expand our family and be a full-time mom.

Who is your go-to brand/designer?
There are so many brands and designers I love it’s hard to pick! I’ve been super impressed with Ted Baker lately and that was one of the first designer brands I started wearing back in the day. Since my go-to outfit includes skinny jeans, my current favorite pair is from Citizen of Humanity and my favorite sweater is from Autumn Cashmere.

Your best fashion advice?
Dress for you, not a trend. If something doesn’t look good on you, or you’re not feeling it, don’t force it just because it’s trendy. The Birkenstocks and Adidas slip-ons (I think of them as shower shoes) trend seemed like everyone had adopted some version of it, but I just couldn’t. It wasn’t me and I knew it. It really didn’t matter how many high-fashion brands designed their version, celebrities, bloggers, or models who wore them, it hasn’t changed my mind about them.

What is one thing you wish you knew before you started blogging?
How much I would love it. I had friends tell me for years that I should start a fashion blog and I was hesitant and I really don’t know why. Maybe it was the fear that no one would care about what I had to say, how I dress, or what I wanted to share. Blogging has been so much fun for me, it’s something my husband and I can do together, he’s my photographer. It’s a lot of hard work but it’s very satisfying and enjoyable. Plus blogging has allowed me to meet so many amazing people and experience things I otherwise would not have had the opportunity to.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
After graduating high school I moved to Nashville, TN to dance with Nashville Ballet. I danced professionally until an injury became unbearable a year and a half into my ballet career. It was my passion since I was three that turned into my first dream career.

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Ooh that’s a tough one, only because my family and I have so many holiday traditions. Thanksgiving is definitely my favorite holiday partly due to the massive amount of pumpkin pie I consume but also because it’s my birthday. Every year I celebrate Thanksgiving and my birthday with my family. I’m so happy to be able to spend the holidays with them! I also love our Christmas morning tradition of having breakfast with my in-laws. Every year for the past decade I have been going over there in the morning, and every year I stop at Starbucks on the way and bring everyone’s favorite coffee drink!
