This anti-Valentine’s Day event isn’t really celebrated by Europeans or North Americans and has only recently risen in popularity. Like its name implies, the day — originally invented by Chinese college students — is dedicated to all you single ladies (and men)! It falls on the 11th day of November, and the numbers 11/11 symbolise “bare sticks” in Chinese.  Historically, Singles’ Day was never a big event in China — no special sales, events, or traditions marked its arrival, and it was really just a chance for Chinese students to honour their single friends.

In 2009, however, Singles’ Day went from being an obscure student-led holiday to Asia’s biggest online retail event. Alibaba, China’s largest ecommerce company, brought the holiday to fame when it coined the term “double 11” and offered massive discounts on this unique holiday. Ever since then, the popularity of Singles’ Day as a major retail event has risen exponentially. In fact, the online shopping occasion is now so huge that sales topped a whopping $8.5 billion in 2014. Now Singles’ Day is so influential in China that it’s akin to Black Friday and Cyber Monday rolled into one!
