Industry News: What’s new with Snapchat and why you should be using it!

Are you getting in on the Snapchat action yet? If not, you should seriously consider adding it to your medley of social media tools. New developments are fueling the buzz around social media’s next big thing. This means that more and more bloggers and advertisers alike are paying attention to Snapchat as an opportunity to connect with followers and promote their brands. Here’s what’s happening with Snapchat that you need to know about . . .

For those of you who aren’t already on the Snapchat bandwagon (where have you been?!), did you know that this photo- and video-based messaging app has grown to over 100 million daily users? That’s a HUGE pool of followers you could be engaging with. Compared to other social channels like Instagram, Snapchat is as real and as candid as it gets, which makes it a supereasy (and addictive) app to incorporate into your social media arsenal. So here’s what’s new with Snapchat and what it means to you as a blogger.

A Solution For Measuring Traffic and Engagement?

Plans are being made to make Snapchat more transparent when it comes to understanding traffic and engagement driven by individual users. This would be done through an analytics tool called comScore, which would charge large publishers for the ability to measure their Snapchat audiences and traffic.
So what does this mean for bloggers? This comScore solution may only be accessible to large-scale publishers, but the fact that Snapchat recognises the demand to measure traffic and engagement indicates that it is beginning to be seriously considered by brands and advertisers as a channel to invest in. So you should take it seriously too. This development will mean that paid Snapchat campaigns are likely to ramp up even more. Take note of Snapchat as a whole new revenue stream when it comes to working with brands! Check out our Snapchat collaboration with Farfetch, for instance.

New Features!

Snapchat has announced some exciting new features coming with its 2.0 version, which should make adopting it as part of your social media strategy even more seamless.

  • Upload photos from your phone: Finally! This moves Snapchat from an in-the-moment app to one that can be used to share past moments.
  • 10-second looped video/audio notes: With video and audio notes, users can post genuine, in-the-moment reactions.
  • Stories now autoadvance: When you finish a Story, the next one begins automatically, keeping content flowing and viewer engagement up.

These updates will make it easier than ever to utilise Snapchat’s unique ability to connect with readers on a more authentic level. Think of other channels like Instagram and Facebook as Snapchat’s more polished counterparts. Snapchat feels more real. It’s of the moment and candid. That might sound a little scary at first, but your readers will feel like they’re getting the real you and are more likely to engage in a more meaningful way. What’s more, this makes Snapchat the perfect medium to promote yourself and your unique offering as an influencer. In other words: capitalise on the authenticity of this platform to grow your brand!
