Industry News: Facebook Is Shaking Up Its News Feed!

Facebook’s News Feed is changing again! If Facebook is a big part of your social media arsenal, you might want to take note of the social media giant’s new algorithm update. The way it determines how and where stories appear in the News Feed is getting another shake-up, meaning you could see a change in the amount of traffic and engagement driven via your Facebook channel. Read on to understand the key changes and what they could mean for your Facebook strategy.

Last week, Facebook announced a new update to its algorithm, or in other words, the way it displays stories in the News Feed. In a nutshell, posts that are important to users are going to be prioritized, and Facebook has realized that clicks, shares, and comments aren’t always the best indicators of this.

On the whole, users don’t “like” or comment on every post they read (News Feed lurkers, they’re on to you!). So to get the full picture, Facebook is going to put more emphasis on how long people spend looking at posts.

So what does this mean? Focus is now on the quality of posts. To keep up with the changes and ensure that your followers are still seeing your posts in their News Feeds, think about the quality of the posts you share. Are they interesting, engaging content? Will your users want to stay looking at them for more than a few seconds? Pages guilty of posting clickbait will be the hardest hit, so make sure there is some engaging content behind those catchy headlines you share!

Not everyone will see a significant change in the amount of traffic driven by Facebook, but keeping on top of social media updates is always a wise idea. This can be tough when there are so many social channels to keep up with; it’s easy to fall victim to social media overload! If this sounds like you, don’t be afraid to slim down the number of social channels you focus on, but be sure to continue building those that are popular with your reader base. Facebook is an oldie but a goodie. It might not be the shiniest, newest, most exciting social channel, but it’s an important one for branding your blog. It’s worth securing a Facebook page, as it acts as a landing page in case anyone is on the lookout for your blog. And of course, it’s another channel to monetize!
