Hey ladies and gents, meet Emily from The Lipstick Fever…
Tell us a little about yourself?
I’m Em! Born and raised in a beach town in Rhode Island, however, have fully embraced life as a New Yorker these last few years. I’m a foodie, love to explore and travel, and have a flair for styling. Professionally, I’ve worked in digital media since I moved to the city.
When did you start blogging and what made you want to start a blog?
I started my blog a little over a year ago! I’ve always loved styling, fashion, and writing. The blog was a natural next step for me and a convenient side project to fulfill my creative side.
I blog . . .
Part-time! Full-time I work in digital media.
Do tell us about the name?
Lipstick adds an air of confidence to any look — my favorite memories in NYC are getting ready for a night out with my girls and throwing on a bright red lip. The “fever” part comes from that excitement — expecting the unexpected. TLF embodies this idea and is an expression of my own personal style.
How do you stay true to yourself while continuing to evolve in the blogger community?
I just try to focus on myself and all the things that I love, while always remaining authentic.
How has your style and blog evolved since starting your blog journey?
SO MUCH! Your style changes so much in your 20s. As I grow, I find I love more classic items, ones that I’ll have and wear forever. There’s really something to be said for the whole #capsulewardrobe concept.
Speaking of events, you are such a great networker; we saw you in NYC last time we were there! How did you get to be so good at it, and any advice for newer bloggers on networking who aren’t so comfortable with it?
That’s so sweet of you! Networking is something that has always come natural to me in my professional and blogging experiences. My advice for those that aren’t so comfortable with it is to push yourself outside of your comfort zone! Also, the more you do it, the easier it gets. Meeting new people in the blogger world is crucial for learning and the best way to grow your audience.
Do you have any fashion or lifestyle bloggers you admire and follow?
I’m a big fan of The Skinny Confidential and Thrifts and Threads. I love that they give blogger/business advice — for me, that’s the most valuable kind of content.
How did you build your tribe of bloggers (blogger BFFs you made while on this journey)?
Through networking! Networking virtually has become so easy with Instagram. On the other hand, nothing beats a face to face so I love meeting blogger friends in person via coffee/lunch dates and networking events. ShopStyle throws some of the best. 🙂
Do you have any tips for bloggers starting out or bloggers looking to focus on a vertical like lifestyle/fashion?
Find your niche and hone in on it. That’s the best way to start out. In such a saturated industry, focus on your strengths and expand verticals later.
Photography is a big deal for a fashion/lifestyle blogger; what kind of camera and lens do you shoot with?
I have a Nikon DSLR and love it for lifestyle/food photos, however, my outfit photos are shot with professional photographers that I meet through my network. This is just what works best for me!
As a fashion blogger, you get to wear some incredible brands; which are some of your favorites?
French Connection, Dune London, Madewell, Rebecca Minkoff, and Esther Boutique (AU brand) — their stuff is amazing and affordable!
What is a go-to look you’ll be wearing this Summer?
A flowy maxi skirt, sneakers (preferably high-tops), and a favorite t-shirt — perfect for the office (mine is casual) or traveling for a weekend away.
Where do you do most of your shopping, online, in-store, boutiques, etc.?
All of the above! Whatever is most convenient that day — usually a lot of online shopping is involved.
What is the one thing most people would be surprised to know about you?
I played basketball for over a decade! I played in travel leagues and my high school varsity team for four years.
You have a fun-loving tone to your blog; how do you toe the line between how much to share with your audience?
I can’t stress enough how important it is to be real. The more raw you can get, the better. I admit I struggle with this and am always trying to push myself to share more. It can be challenging, but your voice does develop over time. Experiment and have fun with it. Be patient with yourself.
Favorite social media outlet?
My favorite outlet is probably Snapchat. As much as I love Instagram and a beautifully curated post, Snapchat keeps it real. This type of content means more to people than a carefully staged coffee pic.
