Data Deepdive: End of Year best days and times to post this season

December 1, 2016 | Tips & Best Practices

This holiday season, we are ready to help make you some sales, and we know you are too! We’ve pulled together some game-changing stats to keep you in the know with when you should actually be sharing content before, during, and after the hottest shopping season of the year. We of course pulled this data from our giant ShopStyle database, which gets over 18M+ shoppers.

Tips for November
  • On Cyber Monday last year, traffic picked up sharply around 5 a.m. PST/8 a.m. EST and maintained high levels of dollars driven until about 8 p.m.PST/11 p.m. EST when it dropped off.
  • 92% of sales from Cyber Monday happened in that time frame while traffic remained strong the entire day.
  • In contrast, on Black Friday, shopping steadily increased until its high point at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST, after which it leveled off and slopeddownward more like a traditional shopping day.
  • 72% of sales happened from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Black Friday, and 30% of shopping occurred from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Sales started sloping upward about a week before Black Friday, with the 7 days leading up to Black Friday accounting for about 24% of all of November sales, peaking on Black Friday and then again on Cyber Monday.

  • What does it mean?
  • In November, make sure that your posts are going up at least a week before Black Friday.
    • Online shopping for Black Friday is almost as high as Cyber Monday, so don’t miss your opportunity — post early!
    • Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, shoppers are still shopping at record levels for the month (and probably considering what to purchase), so make sure you have a fresh post between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
    • On the actual day of Black Friday, post before 10 a.m. PST to ensure that readers see you first before they shop. On Cyber Monday, people are shopping all day, so the earlier, the better!

    Tips for December
  • December shopping peaks at the beginning of the month, and then again about 10 days before Christmas, and again 3 days after Christmas.
    • 50% of sales for December are driven in the first two weeks of the month, and then sales are lowest in the 2-3 days before Christmas.
    • The week between Christmas and New Year’s accounts for about 20% of total sales for December.
    What does it mean?
    • Keep that posting momentum going after Cyber Monday given how much in sales is driven in those first two weeks of the month.
    • Try to post a fews days after Christmas.

Frances
