Introducing #CreatorStory! A new series highlighting ShopStyle Collective influencers, their stories and learning experiences, and advice they have for other content creators who may just be getting started.

This month, we begin the series by celebrating Black History Month with Tiffany of TiffanyTurnerMoon to hear more about her own authentic experiences that have shaped her into the influencer she is today!

Tiffany Turner-Moon’s #CreatorStory

Q: How do/did you navigate being a person of color wanting to become an influencer?

A: It isn’t easy, but I have found it is worth it. My wanting to become an influencer started as a superficial whim and ended with a lot of research, intent and a sense of activism. As a black woman, I am aware that I am a part of a marginalized group, as such my opportunities don’t necessarily look the same as others. I realized that I wanted to change that – not only for myself but others as well. 3 years into my influencing journey, I try to remember that my ancestors (MLK Jr, Medgar Evers, Maya Angelou, W.E.B Du Bois, Harriet Tubman, Fredrick Douglas), all began influencing without a platform. I pulled on their strength and accomplishments – to give me the courage to begin to create a place for myself within the influencer community. Through conscious actions, candid conversations – I share my experiences and opinion. It just so happens one day it may be about purchasing a pre-loved handbag and another day it may be about uplifting creators of color.

Q: How can your followers support some of your favorite Black-owned businesses?

A: They can support them by showing up for them year round. That support looks different for everyone, if you can’t afford to make purchase, then: like their content online, sharing their content, spread the word about them! I think a lot of people assume the only way they can show support is through monetary means, and that isn’t true. Liking, commenting and sharing these businesses is free! By simply sharing a Black owned business online and offline with family/friend – you are bringing awareness to their brand and therefore giving them the opportunity that 9 times out of 10 they are not afforded.

Q: What advice would you give someone that wants to become an influencer?

A: If it’s what you want to do, then do it! Know that your worth is not determined by someone else’s inability to: see, accept or promote it. Being an influencer is more than sharing your OOTD, it is about your ability to quite literally influence others. Allow you heart and passion to shine through your content and you community will come.
