Blogger Spotlight: Cheetah Is the New Black

December 11, 2015 | Blogger Spotlight

Hey ShopStyle Collective! You are a very special and exclusive community, so we are always striving to help support you as a brand! We started doing Blogger Spotlights to showcase our unique members and hilight thier blogs so you can learn a little more about them as fellow bloggers. Today I’d love to introduce you to Alicia from Cheetah is the New Black.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I grew up in Chico (Northern California), studied biology in college (Santa Clara University), married my best friend, and made my way to the East Coast where I worked at my favorite magazine on thier dot.com team (Elle.com). After making our way back to the West Coast, I helped open a boutique and acted as a buyer. I’ve since stepped away from the store and focused more on stylilng and my lifestyle and fashion site: Cheetah is the New Black.

You’ve done it all! Styling, buying, writing for Elle — what has been your favorite gig thus far?
Gosh, it’s all been fun! I get bored easily, so I like to try a little bit of everything — the mix keeps me inspired and challenged. I will say, though, best of all is working for myself. Creating my own schedule and working on projects that excite me is pretty awesome, although, being a buyer, going to market and interviewing cool people like the Olsen twins (when at Elle) are right up there.

When did you start blogging and what made you want to start a blog?
I started Cheetah Is the the New Black a couple of years out of college in 2009. My boyfriend at the time (now husband) encouraged me to start a blog. He knew I loved writing and fashion and was in need of some kind of constructive creative outlet. I was living in San Francisco at the the time and working at an investment firm. Thankfully, through the blog, I was able to jump into the world of fashion and create a more fullfilling career path for myself.

I’ve been following your blog for some time and am always in awe of your gorgeous shoots — diner parties in the woods, flower-crown-crafting parties, rooftop soirees! Where do you get your inspiration from?
All over! I’m constantly sifting through magazines, scouring the Interwebs . . . and, obviously, Pinterest!!

Any favorite fellow bloggers or websites that inspire your personal style?
Always Judging (I’m loving her Tumblr right now for inspiration) . . . and I read my good friend Sam (Could I Have That?) daily. I also love to swoon over the design and eats on Eye Swoon.

As a lady on the go, what is the one thing you never leave the house without?
My iPhone (doesn’t everyone?)! And lip gloss.

You have become incredibly sucessful in turning your blog from a hobby into a brand and business. Any blogging tips for beginners?
Don’t worry about those first few posts or get caught up with trying to perfect your writing/photography . . . just start! It’s all an evolving process and you’re constantly working to build and improve your brand. Don’t take it too seriously, and stay true to yourself.

What is your next dream job? Dream collaboration with . . . ?
Styling a shoot in collaboration with Free People. I also what to throw a speakeasy-esque party in San Francisco — at a hidden location! Can we make it happen?

As a buyer and shop owner, I’m sure you’ve seen your fair share of fabulous brands! What are some of your favorite brands to wear?
I’m a loyal Isabel Marant fan and wearer. 😉 I’m also a big fan of Citizens of Humanity denim and anything IRO, Ulla Johnson, or Rebecca Taylor. I’m especially drawn to a mix of feminine and bohemian pieces since moving back to California. Oh and Gladys Tamez for amazingly unique and cool hats.

Since it’s Fall, what would be your ideal Fall outfit? And can we get a sneak peek into your fab holiday wardrobe must haves?
My ideal Fall outfit is skinny jeans, Western-inspired boots (these are my go-to pair), a cozy sweater, and a hat depending on my mood (or hair situation). Holiday must haves — an ivory pleated skirt or all-ivory/white look and a chic evening blazer.

Where do you do your shopping? And do you do “Black Friday” in stores or online? 🙂
I love boutique shopping best. I usually only shop when I’m in San Francisco or traveling . . . or online. My favorite boutiques are Curve on Fillmore (for unique designer pieces) and Dish in Hayes Valley. I’m also a big NET-A-PORTER.COM girl. I’m, gasp, not really into Black Friday shopping. This year I made one purchase on Cyber Monday at St. Frank (framed indigo for our family room).

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
Hmm, if I wasn’t blogging, I probably wouldn’t be on any social media channels? I’m pretty shy about sharing my personal life actually . . . I never post on my personal Facebook account.

Flats or heels?
Heels (in boot form) because I need all the height I can get.

Favorite social media outlet?
Instagram.

How to Create a Sidebar Widget on Blogger

December 10, 2015 | Tips & Best Practices

A lot of you have asked how to create a sidebar widget to display your favorite items. You can create one and have it up year-round but switch out the items to match the season. It’s especially important to share your favorite go-to pieces since your readers trust your style and guidance on your blog to do their seasonal shopping.

For Blogger:

  1. Create your widget using our tools! Keep in mind that if it’s a sidebar you’ll want to restrict the sizing to fit your blog.
  2. Head to the layout tab
  3. Scroll over to the right side of the page to “sidebar-right-2-1” and click on HTML/JavaScript
  4. Go back to the widget you created, and click on “Copy Embed Link”
  5. In the HTML/JavaScript box that pops up you can paste the widget code.
  6. Add an appropriate title to your widget prior to the start of the code if you want to name it — like Holiday Favorites, or Seasonal Stockting Stuffers.
  7. Save.

Violá, you now have a sidebar widget. Utilize this year-round to maximize your earning potential!

Best Blogger Gift Guides!

December 10, 2015 | Tips & Best Practices

A few weeks ago I asked you all to send me your awesome gift guides. I got a ton of responses, and below I’m sharing the most interesting ones you should check out and tips you should use from them to best monetize your blog this holiday season!

  • Kara from Whimsy Soul — her gift guide focuses on a price point of under $75! Tip to borrow: use a price point and stick to it: people always have a budget and love that you’ve done the legwork for them.
  • Martha Jane from Martha Jane — her gift guide is all about you! It’s focused on what the blogger wants. Tip to borrow: create a roundup of items you’d want for yourself, since your readers love your style and are shopping it already!
  • Taylor from Perpetually Hungry made her gift guide focused on the host with the most. Tip to borrow: create a collage like Taylor did to really showcase your items.
  • Caroline from LCB style focused on a $100 price point. Tip to borrow: add editorial notes under your fave items to call out notes your readers wouldn’t already know.
  • Amanda from Fashionably Clearance talks all about the dudes. Tip to borrow: don’t forget about the men in your life; they are hard to shop for, so make a roundup to help your readers out!
  • Leanne from Classy yet Trendy did a gift guide “for her.” Tip to borrow: utilize both text links and image widgets to add more places for your readers to click on and make more $$!
  • Becky from the Becky Diaries did a gift guide for the traveler. Tip to borrow: add different sections — in Becky’s case, it was types of travel gear — and create a widget for each section to better monetize.
  • Gabrielle from Gabrielle Gz did a stocking stuff gift guide it it’s all under 10 euros! Tip to borrow: cater to your international clientele if you have a presence in another country and and focus on low-price roundups in that area.
  • Melissa from Melissa Takes Fashion does a roundup for the littles. Tip to borrow: baby and toddler clothing are the cutest, create a collage like Melissa and watch your clicks grow.
  • Isabella from Yes It’s Prep takes the legwork out of thinking too hard and does an all-inclusive gift guide. Tip to borrow: create several gift guides in one, ie. for her, for him, for the little ones, etc!
  • Katerina from Delirium Style pulls off the Greatest Gift Guide. Tip to borrow: come up with a clever name like Katerina’s for your post and you’ll be sure to get SEO attention and more readers to the post.

And here are a few other cute gift guides to check out for inspiration . . .

  • Giada from Miel Cafe .
  • Sam from Beyond Brunette.
  • Leanne from LegalLee Blonde.
  • Amanda from For the Love of Glitter.
  • JJ from Belly Itch Blog.
  • Rebecca from Beckabella Style Inspirations.
  • Jordan from North Shore Proper.

For those who have created an interesting gift guide with a cool tip you think other SSC community members could use please email charris@popsugar.com. Send over the link to your guide as well as the tip you want to share for a chance to be featured on this blog!

Bloggers Give Back For Dress for Success Is Now Live!

December 8, 2015 | Must Know

As the holidays are rapidly approaching and gift giving is in full swing, giving back in a blogger-approved fashion is very in vogue. Over 70 bloggers have signed up for the ShopStyle x Dress for Success campaign to donate 10 percent of all sales completed from Dec. 8 and 9. ShopStyle will match everything, $1 for $1. Bloggers are sharing stories of people who have empowered them and style tips to feel confident, including documenting their “power outfit” — the one that nails that confident feeling every time! Head here to see all the ladies participating and read the inspiring stories behind these confident women. Consumers are encouraged to shop for their power outfits, as 10 percent of all sales will be donated to Dress For Success, and ShopStyle will match all proceeds 100 percent. So do some good this season and give back to a great cause.

Huge thanks to all the amazing ladies who signed up to donate and spread the word regarding this worthy cause. We love you all for partiipating and can’t wait to see the impact you all will make! Your goodwill is already being appreciated and shared over on Who What Wear and POPSUGAR Fashion. Well done, ladies!
